Lee Gardens Urban Talks Series – Episode 28【Artistry in Every Inch】A Journey into Hand-Carved Mahjong Culture

Sunday, 2026/06/28

In Hong Kong, the rhythmic “clack” of mahjong tiles is more than just the start of a game; it is the heartbeat of family gatherings and community bonds. Yet, in an era of mass production, the tactile “soul” found within the square inch of a hand-carved tile is becoming a rare treasure. Hand-carved mahjong is not merely a craft; it is a delicate balance of strength, aesthetics, and unwavering focus—a true embodiment of our Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In this episode of Urban Talks, we invite you to step into a world of miniature artistry. We are honored to welcome Master Cheung Shun-king, a veteran artisan with over 50 years of experience. As one of the few remaining masters dedicated to the full manual carving process, Master Cheung will share his personal journey—from the industry’s golden era to his steadfast commitment to preserving the craft today. The session will be moderated by a journalist from “Hong Kong Craftsman,” offering a deep dive into the cultural narratives behind every stroke of the chisel.

During the workshop, you will pick up the tools under the Master’s guidance and experience the traditional process: from sanding and drilling to carving and coloring. Join us at Urban Sky to rediscover the warmth of handmade heritage amidst the vibrant skyline of Causeway Bay.
